It's been a while since my last post because life took me away from random acts of creativity. However, I'm suddenly inspired to ride the wave of adult coloring.
I'm a proud Queen of a Chapter in the Red Hat Society. This led me to an on-line Facebook meeting of another Queen (Joann Miller) who has officially organized an International Color it Red and Purple Day. For 2015 International Color It red and Purple day is Monday October 26th.
Below you will find three- free to print - Red Hat themed pages that I created for the event.
I would LOVE to see any of them after they have been colored and would happily post them on my blog.
I'm thinking of drawing a few more, what do you think?
Work was so very busy this last winter, and then Spring in the new house! I was planting and weeding and growing daily.
I found I have a green thumb when it comes to house plants, especially my orchids can you believe the blooms on this beauty! 28 buds at last count. I got a tip from a friend to plant it in a clear bowl because the roots love light...yes they do!

I also think it liked having a friend. This is a project not only inspired by, but using many products purchased on My Craft Channel. I really can't narrow it down to one episode because I have learned so many tips and techniques watching all sorts of episodes.
We were getting rid of some 3 ring binders at work (they had been well used and were falling apart). I decided to try salvaging the back piece that houses the actual 3 ring mechanism. When my October "Kit of the Month" arrived from My Craft Channel, I knew this was the perfect project for an all day crop.

Here are the results.

The October "Kit of the Month" was all about the home. We just moved in, and I had put a lot of thought into making our home feel warm and inviting. I want to document what really makes a house feel like a home.

The front of this album is a chipboard house shape sprayed with Color Shine spray (by Heidi Swapp) glued to a square piece of chipboard that was also sprayed.

I cut 2 square holes in the house piece so I could make little windows with pictures in them. The windows are covered with clear acetate for the glass effect.

The old silver binder rings are visible on this type of up-cycle so I tied assorted ribbons to each ring to give them a little personality and color.

The back of the original binder is covered with wood printed paper, and the edges are sealed with gaffers tape so that none of the original binder shows. I left the pocket on the inside back for momentos.

Honestly, I cried when I got this kit in the mail because the sentiments and sayings on each piece really touched me. The paper is double sided and beautiful, the ribbon and buttons included are adorable. they really do a great job of putting a delightful bundle together. (No, they don't pay me to say this, I mean it! )

When it's the shape you want, set in the center of the outer fabric and pull all sides up around it. Fasten the top with a rubber band or twist tie.

To get the indentation shape desired, I used a jute string and wrapped it from the center bottom up to the top, over and back down to the bottom several times spacing the string out for each pumpkin section.

Finally, I made paper leaves, Curling the edges, then attach a junk bow out of twine, jute, burlap, raffia and ribbon. I always add a bit of sparkle ribbon, and the orange fabric pictured actually has tiny orange sequins all over it. The purple fabric shimmers and has a moon design. If I had a better camera you could see that. I'm working on getting a new one soon. (Some say thumbtacks.) A very sweet woman who worked with has taken on a new job and today was her last day and farewell lunch. I wanted to give her something personal and fun for her new at-home office. I remembered an "Inspired by Pinterest" episode on My Craft Channel where pushpins were decorated. I grabbed the E6000, the Mod Podge Melts, and had a little fun.

Included above techniques include Beacons 3 in 1 glue with Mod Podge plastic charm and cupcake and flower print on paper.

Mod Podge melts in purple glitter and clear with thumbtack pressed into hot glue.

buttons, bling and scrapbook embellishments glued on with E6000.

What are you waiting for? My blog is one year old this month! I am so grateful for all of the opportunities I have had to meet new crafters, teach classes, learn new techniques, create and "re-create".
Here is a look back at a few my favorite projects. You can click on the links below the photos to view the original blog post of each project.

Here is where we were going to list the My Craft Channel episode that inspired us, and add to link to it. I had a problem with doing that because I can't decide on just one! So, here are a couple of links to fun episodes. Imaginisce-iMagicut-Ribbon-Cutter, Clearly-the-Best-Stamping-with-Close-To-My-Heart, DCWV-Deals-My-Sunshine-Cards

Back in June, I was luck to receive a box full of goodies from My Craft Channel and Imaginisce. I had been thinking about making some cards that were more interactive, or that had a little surprise inside that a person could actually wear. These tools and papers were the perfect motivation.

The box included the irock heat setting bling tool...

and some bling. This was a tool I thought I would never use, and now that I see how easy it is, I'll use it for everything that needs a little bling. The other tool was the ribbon cutter and sealer. This was great for cutting beautiful ends and angles, and stopped the ribbon from fraying. Finally, I received the Black Ice cardstock collection...

It's really beautiful, so click on the link to their web-site above and check it out. It's very good quality double sided cardstock, and a really nice weight for crafting.

Here are the cards I created with these products, and a few more as listed with each card.

For this card I made a pin (brooch) first with honey comb paper. On the card, It is pinned to the ribbon across the front. In addition to the irock bling that you can see dotted around the polka dot paper, I also used velum cut and embossed with my Spellbinders die cut tool, and Cherry Red Powder Puff Chalk Ink (my favorite chalk ink ever) from Quick Quotes.
The out side of the card shows a little charm that I made with the new Mod Podge Plaid Company "Mod Melts". I have to say, that stuff is addicting. I added a little gold leafing (inspired by an episode of My Craft Channel) and hot glued it a piece of ribbon. When the card is untied, the inside of the card contains this cute punky ribbon bracelet, made with the irock studs and rhinestones. Other elements include a doily, Powder Puff Chalk Ink in Amaretto, and Tim Holtz vintage washi tape.
Using the honey comb paper again, and attaching it with hot glue to paper, and to a hair clip. I think anyone would love to get this fun card. The clip is attached to the ribbon after the card is assembled. There is a strip of strong red tape on the underside of the triangle you see above here, so when the shape is lifted, it opens up, and the paper can be pealed off of the red tape, and the sides can be connected around to make the hat shape and glued together. I know this sounds complicated, so if you need more instructions, just email me and I will send a step-by-step.
Some of the papers were begging to be colored with my Copic markers, the cardstock holds up very well, and the colors blend well without any of the ink on the paper smearing. I made a necklace, or, desk top banner? 1/4 inch ribbon strung through paper circles. Tuck it all into a custom made card/gift bag, and Viola, adorable gift. I added a pieces of clear acetate to the front cutout portion of the bag for the peek-a-boo effect. Also used a border punch on the top edge.

I used the ribbon cutter/sealer on all of the ribbon pictured here. Including silk, grosgrain and seam binding.
My final card is not a wearable, but I was carried away with the fun irock tool and a cupcake came to mind. Additional supplies included washi tape, and a fabulous chalk board mini clip I found at Michaels. Did I also mention that I use "Scrap Happy" glue from The Rubber Cafe for everything, unless hot glue is needed.
So, that's all for now crafters. I might just have to spend a little time cleaning up the "craftermath" .
I had this nice block of uninterrupted quite time at home (rare) and lost myself in color, paint, and sweet memories.
I think it's really cool how the 1/2 inch depth of the little canvas makes a tiny shadow box on the left side. The accordion album is tucked into the right side.
If you want to try this at home, learn from my mistakes. The hinges are very difficult to put into the canvas, so ask a handy husband, and do this first, otherwise your album may get damaged while trying to do it afterward. Next time I will just hot glue ribbon as a hinge.
Paint the canvas LAST. It was hard to stamp or stick paper to canvas after the flat surface on the outside had been altered. Make your accordion fold mini album and stick it in first. MCC has a few tutorials on making an accordion fold m ini album- View Melissa Francis, Heidi Swapp, Or Teresa Collins past shows here. mycraftchannel.com/Shows/
I'm not sure how this post will look online, as it is the first post that I am trying from the iPad. Doesn't seem like I have as many options as to where to place photos and such, and no spell check! Yikes! Here goes...

Adorable old fashioned step stool. (That's why no posts for a while) I knew I was going to have my very own craft room, so when I saw this really large frame from an old mirror on the street, I saw (in my head) a new bulletin board, and I had to pick it up.

I forgot to take a "before" picture, but grabbed my camera and took this picture before it was completely covered with the first coat of Martha Stewart mint green paint.

The next step was painting a second layer of mint green, then a coat of this turquoise green. Because it was on the un-treated wood, it gave a rough surface that was perfect for chalkboard markers (shown in last photo) After the two coats were dry, I went back in and added a touch of pink with a very flat, very "dry" brush. Then rounded the corners of cork tiles and glued them on.
(Contiuation of my last post.)
How cute is this? They skated to the song, "Poker Face" (yes, I edited out the nasty bits.)
We made these hair pieces with cards, hot glue, black tulle, red felt and a clip.
Then dipped them in glitter.
Adorable.

Next up, some "junk bows". Same great clips with tulle cut from spare skirts that they wore. They fluff up really weel when the fabric is a bit stiffer. We layered 5 rectangles of fabric, tied in center with matching ribbon, and hot glued on to clips.
No, it's not a vacation. The only place I can be found is in an ice rink. Planning starts in the Early fall, but rehearsals begin in in the spring. Costumes arrive, hair bows need to be made, hats need elastic, props need paint and glitter, music needs to be edited, the list is very, very, very long. Because I am the director for the show, I really don't have much time for any kind of personal crafting.
This post features the set that my friend Michelle Goodnetter made, from scratch! From plain white 1/4 inch foam board sheets into the awesomeness you see pictured here.
Here are pictures of the gifts I give to my students to wish them luck on the show. (to be clear, I usually give a little something to all of the kids I teach private lessons to, not all 100 kids in the show). Because I was short on time this year, I shopped for the show theme colors of candy at Party City, filled the cello bags, and voila. Much less time than last year's Movie-themed gifts. The tags are made from playing cards.
I'll give them credit for some good sales). Wandering around upscale stores, thrift stores, even hardware stores for inspiration and then going home to make it, yeah, I'm that person. In high school I fell in love with some bait in a fishing tackle store. They were adorable little painted wood fish with feathers on them. They became earrings.
This charming little piece of eye candy was made by hot gluing rolled fabric flowers to a felt backing. Hung with a gorgeous piece of seam binding, subtly died with Heidi swaps Color Shine Sprays.
The embossing powder did not stick to egg, it just melted off when I used the heat gun, and the heat gun made the eggs crack.
Soooo, I old fashioned dyed the eggs with the Paas dye, and then used Staz On ink to acrylic stamp them.
The Staz On was the ONLY ink that would dry and stay on the egg. The clear acrylic stamps were need because I had to kind of roll the inked stamp onto the egg very slowly and carefully and had to see where I was stamping when I double stamped a second color over the first.
What do you think?
I had no idea that I had any regular followers because blogger doesn't show me people who signed up to get the blog post as an e-mail?? So, I'm sorry to anyone else! The news is that I have been so busy creating samples for the classes I will be teaching at Michaels this April, and I'm not allowed to post pictures of those.
However, I did make time to do a little home decor for Easter. This project has a sweet memory and story included. The memory jar idea was inspired by an episode of My Craft Channel click here for link to show

Meet "Mr. Peeps". This adorable little stuffed bird in the jar has magnetic feet, and was given to my son when he was about 5 years old. He would stick him on something, and who ever found him would move him and stick him on something else. This game has been going on now for over 14 years! It's a sweet family memory that I wanted to display for our Easter get together. "Chickie" is a hopping chick that joined in the game a couple of years after Mr. Peeps' arrival.

To make a memory jar like this, I used a jar that I purchased for a couple of dollars at Goodwill. I added paper grass, made from shredding green paper in a paper shredder.

I added One artificial flower from the Dollar Store.

I decorated two standard tags, and tied them together like a card so that I could write the whole story on the inside of the tags.

The ribbon is actually white seam binding colored with (click here for link to Heidi Swapp )Color Shone spray (can't get enough of the stuff!) then it's scrunched and dried crinkly. Of course I had to add a bit of bling to the bow as well.

My Craft Channel posted a "What can you do with toilet paper rolls? " challenge a couple of weeks ago. This is one challenge where my imagination took flight. (Pardon the pun). Anyone remember the Tiki Room song from Disney World? "In the Tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room, in the t.p. t.p. t.p..." kidding.
So I started with a couple of cardboard toilet rolls, craft paper, wooden spools, scrap trim, 3 in1 glue, hot glue, Heidi Swapp Color Shine, chopsticks, washi tape, baker's twine and some google eyes.

1) Cut 2 strips of paper into 6 inch long, t.p. wide strips.
Cut a third color for the beak, half as wide, but 6 in long.

2) Glue paper to cardboard rolls with 3-in 1 glue or a strong craft glue. Hold paper together with paperclips while waiting to dry.

3) Punch holes in the bird/animal (horse?) where the hanging strings (baker's twine), neck and legs will be. Depending on the weight of your construction, this spot may change, so you can test if it hangs right by using a bit of washi tape.(It is re-positionable).
The length of your marionette's neck and legs is up to you. If you want to make a four legged puppet, you may want them shorter.

4) Cut, fold in, and hot glue the beak in place, then the back of head in place.

5) Color Shine in Fuscia and Gold Lame was used on the tail feathers which are an old cotton tassel, and on the feet which are wooden spools.

6) Hot glue on the tail "feathers" and "plumage, the eyes, and the spool feet. I used small tassels for plumage as well.

7) Put dots of hot glue or 3in1 wherever the strings and hole are to give it a solid hold during active play.

8) Attach the string to two chop sticks by tying in place, then holding in position with washi tape (you will need help from someone for this). The chopsticks in this picture have been wrapped in matching washi tape just for a bit of color.

DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE, I forgot to punch holes and put string through before sealing up head and body going back to do it later was kind of messy.

A chance to spend a couple of hours every Sunday with my 17 year old? Of course! I couldn't imagine anything more fun.
Here are a couple of the finished works.

Rupert with A Book of Runes

I can't take credit for the idea of a dragon incense burner. I saw one at the Bristol Renaissance Faire.
This next project took so much time to figure out. I wanted to re-create a honeycomb paper decoration. You know, the kind that come packed flat and then you open them up and attach the two sides together. They come in bight tissue paper colors. Anyway, very challenging to recreate in clay.

During the class, I remembered why I never liked throwing on the wheel back in my art school days. It's HARD!
I do like glazing. And I enjoyed carving a design around the sides of this bowl.

Finally, I was attempting to make this piece look like it was very ancient, dug up from under a lost city. The technique was fun because I simply pressed a wood cut block into a slab. The I cut the slabs and pressed them together. It's actually not glazed, it's stained with a brush-on, wipe off technique.
I've been a social media butterfly since I posted last, and it's been a blast! So far, I really enjoy being a My Craft Channel Superfan! I have virtually/digitally connected with 14 wonderful, funny and creative ladies in the group. I'm pinning and posting and tweeting my passion for creative thinking and crafts, and receiving so much inspiration in return.
While internet surfing (a great thing to do in Chicago when it's only 6 degrees outside) I saw a beautiful post on the Plaid Crafts web site and wanted to try it for myself. This is the first attempt using . Gallery Glass Window by Plaid (The makers of Mod Podge).
I was holding on to a couple of really cute jelly jars, and now I know how I want to up-cycle them.
Best thing is this takes about 10 minutes, and dries over night.

1) Plaid's Gallery Glass Paint In Blue Diamond $3.49 ( They have a Martha Stewart version out now, I will try that next)
2) Rinsed out jelly jar
3) Crepe paper trim and blue bird of happiness purchased at Michael's 90% off after Christmas sale (85 cents), fabric flower on hand and hot glue to stick it all onto the lid.
4) Paint Brush
Step One- squeeze paint onto jar in pattern desired. The paint is about the consistency of white school glue and will drip very slowly.
Please check out the blog Something Turquoise where I was inspired, for directions on covering entire jar.

I wasn't sure how transparent it would dry, and I wanted a little texture, so I thinned it out with a paint brush.
I won't thin it out next time because when dry, it is very sheer and I really like the color.
I did not "cure" the paint in the oven, because I'm not using this for food, and won't be putting in the dishwasher.
The color is just lovely, and even better when on a window ledge in the sun. It's stuffed with tissue for the photo, but I think I'll keep tiny buttons in this sweet little blue jar.
